Surf culture
Surf culture has created a family concept around this sport and from Wavy Surf Camp we would like you to form part of it.
Surf culture. The family has grown from its beginnings in California to settle down in Europe, Portugal being one of the main destinations for the followers of this sport and lifestyle.
We highlight the big importance that the Algarve area and in particular Sagres – where we, Wavy Surf Camp are – have acquired. Each culture has its own traditions, expressions, lifestyles, music styles…And yes, surf is a culture and in our opinion is the best one!
A freesurfer needs a permanent connection with the sea, with nature and with the wind…and this is what you can find here, at Wavy Suf Camp. What are you waiting for to take your surfboard, your backpack and come to visit us?
In surf culture there are also a wide variety of terms and rules to define the atmosphere and rules and even the movements and manouvres. Although there are infinite terms, we will show you the most important ones to put into practice with us this summer.
- Swell: waves, very connected to the forecasting of the tides.
- Spot: places where you can go surfing.
- Stance, the position you take up on your surfboard and the position of the feet, but each position has it own name:
- Goofy: you place your right foot on the front part of the surfboard to surf.
- Regular: you place your left foot on the front part of the surfboard for surfing.
- Backside: when we are surfing and have the wall of the wave behind our back
- Frontside: when you surf facing the wave
- The parts of the wave:
- Peak: the place where the waves break and where all the experienced surfers are.
- Lip: the crest of the wave, the highest part.
- The different types of breaks::
- Point Break: waves that break on a rock or stone seabottom.
- Reef break: waves that break over a reef. This kind of waves are very clean and powerful.
- Beach Break: waves that break on the sandbanks which form the seabed near a beach. Because of the movement of the sandbanks because of the sea current, the peaks of the waves are not always in the same place. These are really good for beginners.
- Types of manoeuvres:
- Aerial: amazing manoeuvre that consists of performing a big jump with the surfboard, and going back to the wave.
- Bottom-Turn: turn that is made at the bottom of the wave, once you drop in.
- Drop: when you go down the face of the wave once you are standing.
- Cutback: movement done to go back to the strongest part of the wave. It is performed by making the infinity symbol around the wave.
- Floater: this manoeuvre is used to pass over the lip of a wave, connecting with the wall of the following wave.
- Snap: to skid in the middle of the wall, giving an strong kick with the back foot and then shifting the weight to the front foot.
