Improve your surfing take off in 5 steps
This month we gave you some tips on social media on how to do a better take off. You guys enjoyed it a lot so we have decided to put all the tips together in a blog post for you!
So yeah take off might seem challenging and you might be struggling with that at time moment. But it is all about considering a few things and focus on that. If you follow these tips you will improve your pop up shortly!
- Paddle facing the shore.
You might see some pro surfers sometimes paddling to the side. This is only for very fast waves and for advanced surfers. At the beginning it is very important to paddle facing the shore. This will give you more speed and inertia and will make this much easier for you.
2. Good paddle technique.
You need to enter the wave with speed enough so the pop up gets easier and smoother. If you paddle just a little you will not enter the wave properly and 99% of the times you will fail the pop up. Remember your body position with your chest up and your legs together and paddle deep, strong and with steady pace.
3. Timing
This could be the most important of all. You should pop up not too early and not too late. The way you will know when you have to pop up is because you will feel the wave already pushing you forward. That’s the correct time!
4.Don´t use your knees.
I know you might feel tempted to lean your knee on the board but don’t do it. This will make your take off slower and you will make it more difficult for the time you wasn’t to catch green waves. Learn to take off without using the knee from the beginning and you will have a lot earned for the future. Practise a lot outside the water!
5. Use the right board.
Use the right board accordingly to your weight, your level and the surf conditions. If your board is too small it will be much harder to pop up. No worries, your Wavy instructor will help you choosing the best board for you.
Now go out there and have fun!
