5 Rules you need to know before going surfing
Did you know that there are a few rules you have to know before going surfing?
These rules are especially important if you plan to go surfing on your own. When you attend a surf lesson your instructor takes care of you and makes sure you do things right so you keep yourself and others safe in the water.
But when you start to go on your own you need to know and respect some guidelines.
1. Sit below the locals. When you arrive to a spot it is not polite to go straight to the peak and sit among the locals. This will make local people upset, so try to sit on the side and below them at the beginning. Once you make yourself confident with the spot and the people you will be able to go to the peak and catch some waves from the set.
2. Don’t paddle every single wave. Be patience, chose the right wave and go for it. Avoid paddling all the waves, especially if someone is already ridding it.
3. Wait for your turn. If you are coming back to the lineup after surfing a wave do not sit back again in the first priority. Sit under the line for a bit until the others have caught waves as well.
4. Don´t snake. If a wave is coming and you are not in priority position you should let the other person paddle and catch the wave. If you paddle hard to get the other person position and catch the wave first it is called snaking and it is not the correct way to surf.
5. Have fun, be polite, be nice. Surfing is a great sport and we can all enjoy it if we are nice to each other.Say hi to the people when you arrive to a spot, respect each other, listen to those who have more experience and…have heaps of fun!
We hope you get a better understanding of surfing rules after reading this post. Is there anything you would like to know or understand better? Let us know in the comments!
