The history of surfing in Sagres, Portugal
The history of surfing in Sagres wouldn’t be able to be understood without a short but intense journey through surfing in Portugal, which nowadays is one of the best places to surf in the world. In the surfing scene, to talk about Portugal is to talk about big waves and world championships. From north to south, the surf in Sagres is getting more and more renowned between the professionals of this sport.
Although its origin is not certain, Portuguese surfing was born at the end of the forties in Carcavelos, through the influence of the American troops after the second world war who brought their surfboards from California, the cradle of surfing in those years. The father of surfing in Portugal came around at a time when there were no materials nor other surfers. His name was Pedro Lima and he adopted a new lifestyle that hadn’t existed among the Portuguese population before then.
From these beginnings, the fame of this sport increased year after year and in 1987 the national surf team was created for the European championship. This took place in France and the team ended up in fourth position. In 1990, the world´s elite recognized the quality of the Portuguese waves in the World Championship in Ericeira, as was reported by international surf media. In the following years, surfing in Portugal increased a lot between the world championships until in the 2010, Peniche was choosen to hold one of the stages of the Surf championship World Tour
