Choose your first board at Wavy Surf Camp
When surfing kisses you for the first time, you fall head over heels for it and you get obsessed so much that you start to seem like Patrick Swayze in “ Point Break”. You spend the whole day in the water waiting for your perfect wave, but when it appears, you paddle strong and you lose it, or you catch it but you fall down just after the take off…Why?

If you are starting out in the wonderful world of surfing, the first thing you have to do is to be true to yourself and choose a surfboard that suits you best, not one which looks good under your arm. So, for that, get a tape measure and get on the scales to take some measurements. The first thing that we have to admit, as well as being beginners, is our weight and height, because they are two essential indicators in choosing your board.
It is recommended that you start with a foam board. This will be an ideal choice to enjoy the waves from the beginning, as they are very stable and it is very easy to stand up, maneuver and paddle. When catching a wave has revealed all its secrets, you should start to use a Malibu surfboard, as they are longer and wider than shortboard and they will help you to improve your surfing skills.
To enjoy learning how to surf in Sagres, at Wavy Surf Camp we recommend: the larger and wider the board, the easier is to stand up on it, but at the same time it will be most difficult to maneuver so that, although the bigger surfboard is better to keep your balance, it is important to find a happy medium. Other aspects to keep in mind regarding this issue are the feet and inches, the measuring system for the surfboards. Approximately, 1 inch is 2.54 cm and 1 foot is 12 inches, or 30.48cm.
To not get confused, if you are around 170cm tall, your surfboard could be a 6.8 feet long or even more. If you are around 185 cm tall, a surfboard from 7.2 feet up would be better. And if you are even taller, more than 185cm, then your surfboard should be 7.6 feet, or almost 230 cm. In any case, if you are a beginner, you should focus on catching the waves and for that, the bigger your board, the better.
